TI:Content analysis of health2related articles of newspapers in China : analysis of three different newspapers

【Abstract】Objective To analyze the coverage on health information and citation of health research findings in newspapers in China1 Methods 　All the issues of“People’s Daily”(PD) ,“Wenhui Bao”(WHB) , and“Beijing Evening News”(BEN) published in April , August , and December 2002 , totally 275 issues , were collected1 The general features (number of pages , numbers of published articles in general and of health articles in each issue etc1) , the length , author ,target readers , and whether or not health research findings were cited of each health article , and the characteristics of cit2 ed health research were analyzed by using a specially designed investigation table1 Results 　853 health articles were found in the 275 issues of newspapers , accounting for only 116 %～319 % of the whole number of articles , and 0131 %～0152 % of the whole space of articles1 Health articles were found in every issue of BEN , 6712 % of PD , and 7111 % of WHB1 PD mainly published health news and WHB and BEN mainly published health news and feature articles (χ2 =431799 , P < 0101) 1 The length of health articles in PD was significantly less than those in BEN and WHB (both P < 01001) 1 The theme of the health articles included treatment and medical care ( 5419 %) , biomedical technology (1317 %) , health service ( 1114 %) , health policy and management ( 814 %) , public health ( 714 %) , and others (412 %) 1 71 health research findings were cited with a citation rate of 8109 % , 32 of the 71 health researches were car2ried out within 1 year ; the places where the researches were implemented were mentioned in 49 research projects (49/ 71 ,6910 %) 1 Conclusion 　Attention is not paid enough to health2related articles in these 3 newspapers1 As a local catchall newspaper , BEN carries much more health2related articles everyday in comparison with PD and WHB , national political organs1 Medical workers have to be mobilized to write more health articles1 Article about health research findings has to mention the resources so as to increase the auth oritativeness of news1
